In order to evaluate lighting poles in Germany, we conducted the first study on the stability of pole systems in Germany.

The results of the “Infrastrukturprojekt Straßenbeleuchtung 2000” (Infrastructure Project: Street Lighting 2000) study, which is representative on a Germany-wide scale, enables us to make statistical evaluations on the stability of pole systems, the potential types of damage, and the influencing factors.

The study found that 3.3% of the poles assessed in Germany are not stable, which means that:
   
statistically, 825,000 poles pose a hazard to people every day.

A total of 48,732 poles were tested in 20 different municipalities. In a first step, the design, construction, and pole type, the installed lighting equipment and affixed signs, and other locational characteristics were collected. Next, support systems were assessed according to chemical, mechanical, and metallographic criteria, and soil samples were taken and analysed as well.

The "Infrastrukturprojekt Straßenbeleuchtung 2000" study is updated on a regular basis, and is revised and discussed in various research groups and working committees with the authorities responsible for street lighting along with other interested parties and participants. Moreover, the project is also increasingly becoming a focus of numerous seminars and conferences on a national and international level.
